NGR Trip Part II: Genova, Italy

11.2.12
This morning I got to the train station and the train was canceled!! Ay caramba! So getting to Genova today was fairly interesting. I caught the next train, but then there was a connection that I had that was no longer lined up. So I caught a different one on that. And then I asked 3 different people before I got a clear answer of what the stop I was actually getting off at was called. Some reason they insisted on telling me it was the stop after the last stop! I meet lots of people traveling alone. The girl on the train was getting off at the same stop as me.
At a connection along the way.
Frozen motion
Genova was wicked cold today. So I covered lots of ground quickly and really didn’t have much time at all because I didn’t reach the city until 13:00 rather than 11, and my train to Rome was leaving at 17:00.
The allies got so narrow!

Now in Italy I had a new language to get used to. I walked into a shop I said bon journo, he mumbled something, I said qua, then I asked in French if he spoke Spanish, though I thought I initially asked for English, but we started speaking Spanish, but his Italian accent was scruffy and hard to hear, his friend laughed, said something, then the owner said, well do you speak English, and I said oui! What a mess! He was laughing hysterically at this point, a kind jolly man, and took the role of a father by the end; telling me to be careful, don’t trust anyone if they tell me to go with them.

I hiked up another good overlook: Piazzale Giuseppe Mazzini
A group of Italians were asking me for something, which I figured out they just wanted to know why the museum was closed. So I tried to say cold in 3 different languages. Some reason everything shuts down when its cold! But they didn’t speak French Spanish or English! They gave me a map though which was nice though unhelpful...

I spy.
I went on, visited a church,

and toured some markets laid out. Bought an interesting looking food for later that was shaped like a croissant. Later I discovered it to be an easy flavored cheese filled with ham and olives, quite good!

It was about time to be going back, though I only had a general idea of the direction I followed the buses that said they were going to the train station for there were plenty of them. At the train station I realized that my train now was early! I didn’t think they made train times earlier, but I guess so! So at this point I am waiting for the train and ask someone in French if they can read the message on our platform in English for me and they said they don’t know French barely English (some Italian though that doesn’t help me) but they are from Spain! So after a little warming up I was speaking Spanish a little better more and more. We talked for a half an hour then sat on the train together. I actually finally got some homework done. He got off at a stop earlier than me. I pretty woman with red hair ended up talking to me the last few hours of the trip. She loved that I was from New York. People either love that or hate it! Where I’m from is starting to be like what language doI speak! She was excited to write down Italian phrases for me and help me with pronunciations. She gave me tips on what to eat and where to eat. She was very sweet! I’m loving the opportunity however brief to speak Italian also. Bed time, and Rome tomorrow! My hostel here is very Roman styled!
